El nuevo virus respiratorio, similar al SARS, se ha cobrado su sexta víctima. Se trata de un varón británico con otras enfermedades asociadas que ha empeorado tras contraer la infección. El virus, llamado nuevo coronavirus o NCoV, se detectó el año pasado en ... Oriente Próximo y hasta la fecha solo se han confirmado doce casos en todo el mundo, en Arabia Saudí, Jordania y en Gran Bretaña, de los que la mitad han fallecido.
El primer caso se identificó en el Reino Unido, en un hombre de origen catarí. Todos han sido casos puntuales, no conectados entre sí, excepto un grupo de personas pertenecientes a la misma familia en el Reino Unido que no había viajado a ningún país de Oriente Próximo. Lo más probable es que se contagiaron por estar en contacto, lo que hace temer a las autoridades sanitarias de que la infección podría estar transmitiéndose persona a persona.
Las autoridades británicas estiman que un centenar de personas ha podido estar en contacto con alguno de los miembros de esta familia , pero hasta la fecha no se ha registrado ningún infectado nuevo. Los test realizados han dado resultado negativo.
Salto entre especies
El origen de este nuevo coronavirus es aún un misterio. Se sabe que es similar al SARS, al síndrome respiratorio que emergió en China en 2002 e infectó a 8.000 personas. Que se contagia con más facilidad de lo que se había sospechado, tanto como un catarro común , y que su origen podría ser animal. Como ocurrió con la gripe aviar, la infección podría haber «saltado» de alguna especie animal a humanos y, en esta ocasión, se apunta a los murciélagos.

UK patient dies after contracting new SARS-like virus
LONDON, Feb 19 (Reuters) - A British man infected with a new virus from the same family as SARS has died, health officials said on Tuesday, bringing the worldwide death toll from the previously unknown disease to six.
The virus, called novel
coronavirus or NCoV, was unknown in humans until it emerged in the Middle East last year. There have been 12 confirmed cases worldwide - including in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Britain - and so far six patients have died.
"This patient had an underlying condition that may have made them more susceptible to respiratory infections," the Health Protection Agency said in a statement announcing the death of one of four people in Britain with the NCoV infection.
NCoV was identified when the World Health Organisation issued an international alert in September 2012, saying a completely new virus had infected a Qatari man in Britain who had recently been in Saudi Arabia.
Since then 12 cases have been identified, including a cluster of cases reported last week in a family in Britain.
The HPA said it had identified and followed up more than 100 people who had close contact with the cases in this family cluster.
"Besides the identified secondary cases, all tests carried out on contacts to date have been negative for the novel
coronavirus infection," it said.
Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that includes those that cause the common cold as well as the one that caused SARS - which emerged in China in 2002 and killed about a 10th of the 8,000 people it infected worldwide.
