ON. CANIKG
On August
5,
Reader MeadO'lO–
croft wrote
us
a letter, "The Cane
For Glamour Girls." She sug–
gested that girls who wore shorts
should be caned for their conceit.
Since then, scores of letters have
come to
us
on the subject. Some
parents approved, some objected,
girls have written confessing to
being caned. With
th~s
selection of
letters we close the contro;!ersy.
The Most Indecent Thing ,
Some of your readers seem to be under
the misapprehension that a Glamour Girl

I
don't

glamour, but cer–
tainly it is not so
easily attained.
Scanty bathing
costumes
were
made for pretty _
figures and any
girl with a pretty
figure is entitled
to wear one.
Mrs. Harve
says she would give her girls the cane
if
they appeared in this "rig-out."
If
she
can't control her daughters without
caning, she isn't fit to be a' mother.
She can't possibly object · to these
costumes because they are unattractive, so
it must be because she thinks them indecent
I
consider her use of the cane the J;Ilost
indecent thing I've heard in
1939.
I
should like to get, her best hat and .

Cure for the "Silly" Age
As
the mother of two daughters aged
15
and
17
years, I read the letter of Mrs.
Harve with interest.
I
find that the sharp

muqt more good than a lot of scolding or
talking to when girls are at what I call the
"silly" age. The other week, I had
occasion to turn my elder <laughter over
my knee and give her a spanking for staying
out late. She has been better since.

. The cane has worked wonders in my
house.
It
always
hangs,
in a conspicuous
place in the kitchen. The sight of iJ works
in nine cases out of
ten.
If
I
have to resort
to it,
I
use it coolly and never in temper.
Recently
I
went on holiday, leaving
the house in
charge
of my daughter, and on
my return the cane was -missing. I must
have visited at least a dozen shops before
I
was able to find another, a very poor
specimen compared with the other, which
I
must have had ten years.
I
wonder
if
other mothers who still
try
and exercise parental control have found
this same difficulty in buying a supple cane.
