Foreign Legion Reports
I got PICTURE POST
containing
the
article on Germany.
I am em –
ployed as bar–
man in the
N .C.O.s mess
and have passed
your paper on to
more than 20
non-comms.
As
you know,
eighty per cent.
of Legion
N . C . O.'s are
German, or
speak ·German,
and your article
made a profound impression. Here, file
few Englishmen have always German
chums.
There are two camps.
All
Latins–
French,
Italians,
Spaniards-keep
to–
gether, and Germans, Englishmen, Finns
aJ;ld Danes form the other group. Most of
these
regret deeply
that England and
Germany are
opp~sed,
and suggest that
were these two nations to combine there
would be never danger of war.
From the crisis of hst September, I
have never heard a single joke at England.
We
·often have discussions on
the
international situation, and non-comms.
give extracts from . letters of relatives in
Germany, proving that the average German
is
not
opposed to England.
It would be well for people in England to
remember that when they are tempted to
hate everything German.
It
would be an· excellent cure for all
warmongers
if
they were forced to serve
five years in the Legion, where every
nation
~nd
colour is represented and all
work, sv,veat, and Rla)' together.
The first
lesson learnt here
is
the
essential Brotherhood of man.
Thanking you for all -that your article
did
to
foster
friendliness and under–
standing between two splendid peoples,
and hoping that your readers will believe
me when I say that "Nazism" is not the
will or voice of the Gennan people.
Legionnaire
T. H. Blanks, 5me. Cie,
2/3 Etrangex, Fes, Maroc.
P.S.
I translated your article on Danzig
into German f6r the benefit of folks
her~,
but if you could contrive to print news of
international
importance · in both these
languages
it.
would help people to know
our view.
His Contribution
I was glad to see your article by Winston
Churchill. Your last piece of" good-will "
printed
in
German has roused so much
interest that, some of your
read~rs
might
care to hear of my own little method of
beating Dr. Gbebbels at
his
ov.n game.
Ever since Munich, I have cut out of
my newspaper any verbatim account of
an
important speech
00
international
affairs by a Qemocratic statesman, or
logical article eii>,ressing the British case.
1-
have by me a list of the names and
addresses of a .numbel' of German firms
who export to the British Empire, taken
from technical periodicals and directories
available in our local ·free libraries. I pop
my cuttings in an envelope, wrapped in a
piece of plain paper, type the address on
the envelope making it look like a business
letter and away
it
goes !
I argue that any firm that carries on
business with us will have- at least one
person 'on the
staff
who can read English,
and that the finest p-ropaganda for us is
- whep a German reads what we
really
said after hearing Dr. Goebbels' version.
It.
costs me a few 'pence a week, and I
reckon over
50
firms in various. parta of
Germany have had my messages by how.
I . have .. the satisfaction of feeling I am
doing something.
If
only
a
few hundred
,more people would join in. Churchill's
article should be in Dresden now.
Mancunian.
It's Our W1»rld
Thank you, Mr. H . Rackow, for your
letter in August 19 issue of PICTURE POST.
, ·To pray these days for "Peace," don' t
you think it is asking an awful lot of the
Almighty? He has given us this wonderful,
world, and what are we so-called· Christians
doing to save it? Surely the Great War,
Abyssinia, Spain, China,
taught us a
lesson.
This world belongs to the people who
wish to live at peace one with another.
It
does not belong to Dictators, Statesmen,
Politicians, Big .Businessmen and War–
monge'rs, who are running the show to line
their own pockets, and for self glorifica–
tion.
It
is not their world to destroy.
Why haye we allowed them to get the
world into such a hopeless mess?
Is it too late .and too much to ask the
Church (all denominations) to make one
big effort to get together and stop this
war madness with all
its misery and
desollition ?
(Miss) E. Summers,
Brunswick Place, Hove.
Militiaman's Adorer
Oh, who was
that handsome young
militiaman you showed being medically
examined in PICTURE POST of August 19?
I absolutely feU flat for him. He quite
took my breath away. I tried to tear myself
away and read the rest of the book, but
I just had to keep turning back to his page.
He's just the person I've dreamt of
meeting.in all my eighteen years .
You say I'm just young and silly? I
suppose I am, but it's he that's made me.
All
my love to
him.

She Invites ·Herself to PICTURE POST
I agree with Reader Jones of Coventry
regarding glamour girls who weigh ten–
stonish. I am willing to be photographed
if you Eke in anything not scantier
than
a two-piece bathing suit.
-
How about it? Shall I call at your
office with my two-piece under my arm.

Girls Are a Pain in the Neck
I think
TQo~
C. Stinton ought to be
ashamed of himself;
17
years of age and
he can't get a ·girl-friend without writing
to PICTURE
POST? Tut,
tut.
He is no
Don Juan.
Anyway, I'm

and
I

Revolution Among Women
I'm sure it is unintentional, but what
with your letters on caning, and now your
scene of two women fighting from " The

I
think
yo~
are
appealing to un–

I am not a prude,

Why.Doesn't He Go Over?
.May a mere male comment on "Glamour
Girls"? These young Jezebels, hypnotised .
by the artificial, don't seem to realise that
they automatically lose all that is really
attractive to men-I don't mean play–
boys.
They lose their simple feminine
charm and womanliness.
The majority of girls in LondoI). are
-unm.odest, hard-boiled, uneducated and
uncultured, and without any ideas beyond
the films and their own appearance.
A
poor look-out for our future race! What
a difference from her Continental sister,
who is usually smart and charming, com–
panionable, interesti.,g and accomplished,
as well as being a good housekeeper.
Hitler has at least stopped all
that
"glamour" nonsense
in Germany and
given the girls a more healthy outlook.
The ones I have met have seemed .friendly,
sporting, intelligent and sympathetic.

The Dignity of England
Reader Kimpton
will
find that most
of the younger generation will
agree
with him on "Boomps-a-Daisy."
It is
the older genera–
tion who are
to
blame. The "Lam–
beth
Walk"
went to
their heads like old
wine.
There is
nothing sadder than
to
see
these old
doddering
octo–
genarians, wearing
an
expression of
inanity, performing
the gyrations
of
the
Lambeth Walk or the Chestnut Tree.
Boomps-a-Daisy will give them all a
new lease of life.
Thank God the younger generation
has
nothing to do with such dances. It is on
their shoulders that the dignity of England
rests.

A Free Democratic Paper
It
is utterly beyond my comprehension
why so many peop le accuse P ICTURE POST
of being anti- this, bias- that, or prej udice
the other. P ICTURE POST does j ust exactly
wh at a
free democratic paper should,
champions the weak, attacks the oppressor,
the only way
to minimise
the many
injustices of our present generation, and
to prepare the way for
their complete
eradication in future generations .
F. Shaw,
" Kia Ora,"
Starkholmes,
MatWck, Derbyshire.
Give Us More .
Mr. Lorant, I admire you, sir.
I t is
proof of your undeniable stamina that
you manage to retain your sanity
in
the
face of such
trashy criticism by
the
dunderheaded fools who must scream for
something they are denied.
" Give us more Glamour Girls"-iliey
shriek-"Give us more Mosley."
"Give us more peace," my friends.
If they must write to PI CTURE POST,
let them write intelligently upon su bjects
that PICTURE POST introduces to its vast
audience. Let them grow up and put
aSide their infantile whining.

Ideals Put into Practice
PICTURE
POST
recently
published
accounts of two rallies at Earls Court.
Since then, a great number of letters in
favour of both sides have appeared in
"What Our Readers ' Say." Most compli–
mented PICTURE POST for putting their
party's view so well . Obviously, PICTURE
POST gave the facts as they were presented.
Your Editor, Mr'. Lorant, has been
It
political prisoner in Germany.
For the fact that he has allowed to be
published an unprejudiced account of a
political party of similar creed to the one
which held him prisoner without trial,
I must give him my greatest admiration.
As
long as PICTURE POST .continues to
give us the facts without trimmings, and
to direct opinion, leaving us (the readers)
to fonn it for ourselves ,
I
and thousands of
others will be grateful.
J. Cronick,
Sigdon Road, Dalstotl, E.8.
P.S.-If only everyone were like M,r .
Lorant.
Duel Accepted
Are the readers who write letters of

Or are they just hoping to see their words
