The British Forces Advance
A
battery and balloon corps detachment of Lord Roberts' s
army advancing towards Johannesburg. The city , capital
of the Rand, was occupied by the British forces
at
the end
of May,
1900.
The
South African -War was the first in
which British troops wore khaki. Machine guns and
mobile 6-inch guns were extensively used .
Baden-Powell, later
to
become the founder of the Boy Scout movement, defended Mafeking from the early days of the
war until May
17, 1900.
The relief of Mafeking was marked by wild enthusiasm
in
England, where
it
was believed
to
mark the turning-Foint
in
the war. Baden-Powell became a national figure, and was promoted Major-General.
