Hay que acercar Japón a España (y viceversa)

Anda estos días por España una delegación de representantes del Gobierno Metropolitano de Tokio, dirigida por Hideki Yokoyama, tratando de promocionar el turismo a esa ciudad, que es tanto como decir al Japón. Tenían que haberlo hecho hace un año pero el terremoto del 11 de marzo lo desaconsejó. Casi once meses después se ha podido realizar gracias a la labor de Taeko Ueda, de la Oficina de Representación Turística de Tokio, que funciona en Madrid desde 2006. Según algunos expertos, como el portal de búsqueda de viajes Skyscanner, al contrario de lo que pudiera parecer, los desastres naturales tienen un efecto positivo en el turismo que visita esos países. Se suelen citar los casos de Tailandia e Islandia. El país asiático ha duplicado el número de turistas tras el devastador tsunami de 2001, y en Islandia, el volcán Eyjafjallajökull, cuyas cenizas cerraron el tráfico aéreo europeo en 2010, ha pasado de ser un perfecto desconocido a uno de los destinos turísticos más solicitados de la isla. Al parecer influye en ello la solidaridad, el deseo de ayudar a la recuperación del lugar, y también una curiosidad no exenta de morbo. Esta hipótesis podría ser válida también para Japón. Por el terremoto y sobre todo por el miedo a la radiactividad que escapó de la central de Fukushima, el turismo extranjero descendió en un 60%. De los 8,6 millones (de ellos 44.000 españoles) contabilizados en abril de 2010, se pasó a los 5,15 millones (14.000 españoles) en abril de 2011. Sin embargo los últimos datos de noviembre pasado indican que el descenso ya era sólo del 13%. El turismo en Japón se recupera, pero el país sigue estando muy lejos de España, lo que hace que siga sin ser un destino frecuentado por los españoles. Y es que, como ya dijeron a principios de los 90 No me pises que llevo chanclas: “Miá questá lehos Hapón”. Y lo sigue estando fundamentalmente en tres aspectos. En el geográfico, evidentemente. Pero los 9.000 km. que nos separan podrían paliarse si hubiera vuelos directos. Durante doce años los hubo, concretamente hasta 1998. Cuando en 2007 Japan Airlines (JAL) se incorporó a la alianza OneWorld, a la que también pertenece Iberia, se rumoreó que podrían restablecerse. No ha sido así. También está muy lejos en el sentido económico. Japón es famoso por su alto nivel de vida, pero también por su alto nivel de precios. Al parecer este problema se ha suavizado en cierta medida desde la aparición del euro, no tanto porque Japón rebajase su nivel como porque España elevó el suyo. Las diferencias ahora son menores. Y en tercer lugar esta muy lejos culturalmente. Y esta característica que podría parecer negativa (el turista español podría sentirse desplazado, Lost in Translation, y no comprender lo que le rodea), es quizá uno de los mayores señuelos de Japón. Su exotismo es una singularidad que a poco que los medios de información nos esforcemos en explicar podría tranformarse en un potente atractivo. En resumidas cuentas, hay que acercar Japón a España... y viceversa.
